As a kid, one of my favorite summer activities was to visit my grandparents back east. We played in the pool and went on outings, but during the heat of the day, we often sat around in the air conditioned house watching tennis. I loved to watch Chris Everett and Martina Navratilova do battle on the tennis courts. While Martina was a strong player, I always rooted for Chris. In my mind, she was a tennis playing princess.
As I got older, I decided I wanted to be the next Chris Everett. The problem was, I was starting a little late as a tennis player. My small, rural, Montana town didn't offer much in the way of tennis lessons, unless you were willing to drive long distances, which my parents weren't. Along the way, I was able to pick up a little tennis, but not enough to be great, and unfortunately, I didn't know anything about tennis training aids like hitting against a wall or using lobster ball machines.
I was a senior when my class c high school added tennis as a sport. Giddy with excitement, I tried out for the team and to my surprise was ranked first seed for my team. I only won one match that year, which happened to be the first one I played and then it was losing for the rest of the season. I didn't know how to become a better player.
Looking back, I wish I had the chance to practice tennis more and with the right tennis training aids. Our school didn't have any equipment, but with a little creativity, we might have been able to find some other ways to practice tennis, especially when we didn't have a partner available.
As the years start to creep up on me, and I realize that not exercising is no longer an option, I am considering playing tennis again. I don't like regular exercise. I don't like the thought of running on a treadmill, taking Zumba or lifting weights, but tennis is something I could get into, and practicing tennis with a partner or tennis practice aids is a great option for me.
Tennis is a great form of exercise and overall wellbeing. Playing tennis can increase strength, stamina, stability, cardio health and flexibility. It could also be said that playing tennis is beneficial for your brain. With the recent media attention about exercising your brain, tennis, a game of strategy and focus can be a great workout for your mind.
Personally, I know that I could use a lot more physical and mental activity in my life. The social aspects are appealing to me too. I think it's time for me to find a place to play tennis, get my hands on one of those lobster ball machines and begin to get this body and mind back in shape. It's me time!
